Book Review: What I Know For Sure by Oprah Winfrey

I have always admired Oprah Winfrey and the difference she has made in so many lives.  She shows honesty, vulnerability, spirituality and wisdom.  When I saw her book at the marketplace, I thought it might be a good read, but wasn’t expecting the degree of insights this woman shared.

This is a book review for, ‘What I Know for Sure‘ by Oprah Winfrey. Oprah Winfrey is amongst the most powerful names in the world. She is a living example of what a person can become if they simply have the zeal to be. Thank God that she made notes of her journey so far and decided to put them together in her book, What I Know For Sure.

Though the book was first published in the year 2014, I only got a chance to read it yesterday.

You’ve got to love Oprah! In my eyes, Oprah does no wrong. In her book, What I Know for Sure, Oprah Winfrey shares some great wisdom that will surely leave you motivated and raring to go.

I must confess, when I read this book, I didn’t know what to expect. And, I must say that I wasn’t disappointed at all. By the time I finished reading, it felt like Oprah was sitting in front of me, ready for an embrace. She also had a way of making me feel like I was sitting next to a good friend, who understood my journey. Some of the topics she discusses are possibility, gratitude, connection, and power.

From the introduction where Oprah goes into how she started writing this book which meant going through her 14 years of articles, I was inspired. This was for no reason other than it reminded me of why I started a document my experiences and look back and reminisce and be able to see how far I’ve come, what has changed, and what core values have stayed the same. Re-reading my articles always takes me back to the time of writing, and the experience and the associated good memories.

You know those books where you have to dig to find those life quotes you want to remember. Well this entire book is quotable. Reading it felt like getting my body, my mind, and my soul hugged by Oprah herself.

There are multiple reasons why I think one must read this memoir. It is easy, it is crisp, it is more like a one-on-one conversation between the reader and the writer. Once you have read the whole, you can go back and read random pieces because they each have the ability to uplift you.

They say ‘Practice What You Preach’, with What I Know For Sure, Oprah has successfully told readers about all her good practices.  She has stated examples and moments from her life to encourage people to chose the path of Joy, Resilience, Connection, Gratitude, Possibility, Awe, Clarity and Power.

The cover also looks stunning.  With bold and rich looking colours, it not just goes with the brand Oprah but also radiates a rich vibe.

I just picked out a few of the things that truly gave me pause that I want to remember. So the way I’ve done it is by including the direct quote and then some thoughts.

“Being aware of and creating four and five star experiences is what life should be about.”

This doesn’t mean trips around the world. It means the everyday things such as a night in with loved ones, or a good book. It really means ensuring most of your everyday life is filled with experiences that give you joy.

“Pleasure is energy reciprocated. What you put out is what you get back.”

Call it karma. Call it coincidence. Call it something else. I believe in putting out good energy because what you put out does come back to you tenfold. I believe this so deeply that sometimes someone will ask me to do something small that might seem insignificant on the bad scale, and you’ll often hear, nope..I can’t deal with that bad karma. The way I look at it is that what I do might be an inconsequential act, but if what I’m getting back is that act x 10, then no thank you! I’m in no way saying I’m great and I don’t do, say and think things that are less than laudable. However, I am aware, and try everyday to simply be better.  The longer you practise it, it becomes easier and just a way of life. Vibrating on a good level just makes me feel much the moment and in the long run.

“A god wink – where all of the things just line up.”

There have been many moments in my life where I’ve truly wanted or needed something..deeply in my heart, and then it just happened. Looking back, the universe has always given me what I needed in life when I needed it. Also, I’ve had some pretty phenomenal, unexpected things happen that I wanted but never thought would occur.

Lately, I have been experiencing more physical pain and fatigue. Much of this is do to some increased stress in my life as a result of some choices I made.  It can be hard to see the gratitude when I can feel so empty inside.  Yet, when I look around, every day brings something beautiful and a source of life.  I see this through calls and texts from friends, through looking outside at the trees blowing in the wind, and through reading books that make me go “aha”, I want to live this way.

Art of living is simple. Where we come across writers who like to scrutinize every bit of existence, we also have writers like Oprah who with utmost simplicity tell us or rather help us be happy. Pick this book, I can assure that it will fill you with a lot of positive energy.

If you’re looking for a little encouragement, reassurance or simply enjoy learning from others I highly recommend you purchase a copy of What I Know for Sure. It’s a timeless book that will nourish your soul, feed your spirit and it’s inevitable that you will start to think about what you know for sure!

What do you know for sure, sounds like a pretty simple question, but when one really takes a moment to reflect on the true meaning of the question it can provoke the need for one to pause and reflect.
